Matiu/Somes Island

A short ferry ride from Wellington is Matiu/Somes Island. The island has been used for a number of different things over the years but is currently a scientific and historic reserve managed by the Department of Conservation. It is not a very large island but it is a great place to spend part of a sunny day.
View from Somes Island

Comparing it to Auckland's Rangitoto, the walking tracks were easier and shorter. I wandered around all the available walking tracks in about 2 hours (including a lunch break and taking lots of photos). The wildlife however was much more diverse and there were a lot more birds and insects on the island. There were some really cool lizards hiding in the shadows as well. Up near the WWII gun emplacements there is also a small field with sheep! Very "New Zealand" hahaha.

Huge cones! They were bigger than softballs!

There weren't any nice sandy beaches like at Rangitoto, but there were great places to lay around and tan while waiting for the ferry. All in all a great place to spend a sunny day lazily enjoying nature.
