Piha Beach & Kitekite Falls

On our last day in Auckland Trina & I rented a car and headed out the scenic drive to Auckland's west coast, and Piha Beach.

Piha is considered one of the most dangerous beaches in New Zealand, and with its intense waves and unpredictable currants it is easy to see why. But with warm (well hot really) black sand, warm winds, and amazing views it is also easy to see why people are drawn here.

There isn't much else to say other than that we did beachy things... walked, splashed around the water, sun bathed, and enjoyed lunch at a nice cafĂ©... but after 6 days in the city, a sunny day at the beach was EXATLY what I needed.

After lunch we headed a short 3 min drive down the road to a foot path out to Kitekite Falls. We didn't know before we went, but there is a great pool at the base of the falls for swimming, if the nearby salt water is not your cup of tea. The walk itself was about 45min round trip and a pretty easy walk for just about anyone. There also appeared to be other trails in the area if you wanted to extend your walk...
